Draughn volleyball takes down Patton in 4 sets

Draughn’s Kalia Randall (left) looks to send the ball over the net as Patton’s Hayden Hein attempts a block during Wednesday’s girls volleyball match in Valdese. Despite dropping the opening set by a 25-20 score, the Lady Wildcats won the next three sets — scores were 25-19, 25-21, and 25-18 — to emerge victorious and move into a three-way tie for first place in the Western Piedmont 3A/4A Conference standings. Draughn (18-10, 11-2 WPC) hosted East Burke late Thursday in both teams’ regular-season finale, while the Lady Panthers (16-4, 11-2 WPC) entertained Chase and R-S Central (16-5, 11-2 WPC) hosted East Rutherford. All of those squads, along with Hibriten and West Caldwell, will participate in next week’s league tournament, which begins on Oct. 12 and continues through Oct. 14 before North Carolina High School Athletic Association state playoff brackets are released on Oct. 15. The first round of the playoffs is scheduled for Oct. 17.

Draughn players are all smiles during Wednesday’s four-set home triumph over Patton. The Lady Wildcats also defeated the Lady Panthers in five sets on Aug. 27 in Morganton, and they are now 4-1 against their intra-county rivals — who entered Wednesday on a 13-match winning streak since the previous loss to Draughn — since the beginning of last season.
