Honor veterans by living the freedom they defended

The millions of men and women who have served our country in the Armed Forces — in times of war and of peace — have made it possible for us to vote, to live under the rule of law, to enjoy citizenship in the oldest republic in the history of the world. Every time we step into a voting booth, we participate in the very freedom they fought to preserve.

As Veterans Day approaches on Nov. 11, we are reminded that the freedom we often take for granted was earned by those willing to serve something larger than themselves. The right to vote is one of the clearest expressions of that freedom. So, if we truly want to honor our veterans, one of the most meaningful things we can do is simply to vote — either on Election Day or during the early voting period.

Unfortunately, many residents living within Burke County’s municipalities chose to sit out this election cycle altogether.

In this week’s municipal elections, 2,226 of Burke County’s 18,219 eligible voters — just 12.22% — went to the polls. That’s a decline from the 17.7% who voted in 2023. The numbers are disappointing, yes, but they’re also a reminder of what’s at stake. Our democracy is strongest when all of us take part.

Two Burke towns did show up in greater numbers. Voters in Valdese and Glen Alpine had the county’s most competitive contests, compelling more residents to head out to their respective precincts. Throughout the county, those who did cast a ballot voted for a mix of both change and continuity to local boards. The men and women who will soon be sworn into elected office will play a key role in shaping our shared future.

The Paper congratulates all who stepped forward to run for public office. Win or lose, choosing to run for elected office takes courage. We also thank the poll workers and Elections Director Kenny Rhyne for their steadfast service — a reminder that democracy depends on ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things.

Veterans Day is not just about honoring the past.

The best way to thank them is not only with words but with action. Let us live as responsible citizens — informed, engaged, and willing to participate in the democracy they preserved for us.
