Friday, Jan. 30, was the last day of operation for 100 Main Restaurant & Bar in Valdese. The building has a new owner, and a new restaurant may open this fall.
An era ends as 100 Main Restaurant & Bar, a popular downtown staple in Valdese, closes its doors.
Last weekend, 100 Main owner Brian Thompson announced the restaurant’s permanent closure after 11 years of business.
Thompson said on Facebook he was unable to reach an agreement with the potential new property owner for a lease that would “allow us to remain sustainable.”
“I am immensely grateful to my staff and the customers who became like family over the years,” Thompson said. “The potential new owner has shared that he intends to keep a restaurant in this space, and I hope that in time, a new, lively place can serve you here.”
Thompson said outstanding gift certificates will be honored through the end of 2026 at 100 Main’s sister restaurant, The Crescent Moon Cafe, at 256 1st Ave. NW in Hickory.
“100 Main was built on a foundation of COMMUNITY SPIRIT, and I pray that this spirit continues to thrive,” Thompson said.
The building went on the market in February 2025 for $495,000 and was later reduced to $450,000 in October. The original owner — Guigou Bros., Inc. — built 100 Main E in 1935. The address has been home to many businesses, with the Belk-Broome Company department store as its first tenant. The sale would mark the first time the building has changed hands.
Burke GIS also lists Guigou Bros., Inc. as the owners of 104 Main St. E (home of Valdese Florist) and 0 Eldred St. SE, all in Valdese.
100 Main’s Facebook page swiftly filled with comments of shock and disappointment with the announcement. One of those, from Valdese Community Affairs Director Morrissa Walker Angi, reflected the thoughts of most.
She wrote, “100 Main has been a huge asset to Valdese for many years. This is devastating news to our community. Thank you to Brian and all the wonderful staff that made this corner such a special place for meals and memories!”
