Quite the gathering at quite the place

Morgantonians with Hugh Morton by the entrance to Grandfather Mountain at the junction of Avery, Caldwell and Watauga Counties – 1957.

Shown left to right: Margaret Bell Ervin (Mrs. Sam J. Ervin, Jr.), Arthur Pinkney “A. P.” Causby, Lena Fitz, Beatrice Cobb (Publisher/Owner of The News Herald), Sam J. Ervin, Jr., and Hugh Morton, who inherited the mountain from his grandfather Hugh MacRae in 1952. Morton is credited with making the mountain more accessible to tourists.

Hugh Morton is also known as one of the most prolific North Carolina photographers, pictured here holding his camera. The automobile they traveled in was an air-cooled Franklin belonging to A. P. Causby.
