Teen faces multiple charges after hitting an MPS patrol car in downtown Morganton.
CITY OF MORGANTON PHOTOA late night crash near Marquee Cinemas left a City of Morganton public safety officer and a 17 year old driver without serious injuries, but the teen now faces multiple charges after investigators determined alcohol was involved.
The wreck happened just after 11 p.m. Friday at the intersection of East Union Street and North Green Street, according to Morganton officials. Investigators said the juvenile driver ran a red light and struck a Morganton officer who was traveling through the intersection.
Burke County EMS responded to the scene. Officials said neither the officer nor the teen sustained serious injuries.
Per procedure, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol conducted the crash investigation. Authorities said the investigation determined the 17 year old was operating the vehicle after consuming alcohol.
The juvenile faces the following charges: no operator’s license, driving after consuming while under the age of 21, fictitious registration plate, open container after consuming, driving while impaired, consumption of beer or wine while underage, failure to stop for a steady red light, and no insurance.
The teen was taken before a Burke County magistrate, who found probable cause for the arrest. The juvenile was then transported to the Alexander Juvenile Detention Center in Taylorsville.
Agencies responding included the Morganton Department of Public Safety, the State Highway Patrol, and Burke County EMS.
