On West Fleming Drive, construction crews can be seen working away on a new project for the fourth-largest employer in Burke County.
The old ABC Store on West Fleming Drive has been demolished to make way for a new parking area. Case Farms will construct a new breast packaging facility on the south side of the property, where the current parking lot is located.
In February, the Morganton Board of Adjustments approved three different variances to reduce setbacks, increase maximum building height and reduce the width of a landscape buffer to allow for the project.
According to property records, Case Farms has owned the ABC Store property since March 6.
Chief Building Inspector for the city Mike Fincher issued a demolition permit for the ABC Store building, along with asphalt parking, concrete island, ground house, concrete sidewalk, and fencing.
On June 20, the City of Morganton approved an electrical permit for a temporary construction trailer on the site. On June 24, the city also approved an electrical permit for the relocation of a main breaker box for the project.
Case Farms has not responded to multiple requests for comment about the progress of the project.
