Republican ballots outpaced Democrats in early turnout. A total of 3,543 ballots were Republican during the early voting period, compared to 1,758 Democratic ballots. Those registered as a Republican or Democrat had to vote their party's ballot. Unaffiliated voters chose whether to cast a Republican Party or Democratic Party ballot.
The busiest day of early voting was Friday, Feb. 27, when 821 ballots were cast countywide. Other high-turnout days included Saturday, Feb. 28, with 534 voters and Thursday, Feb. 26, with 456.
Among early voting sites, the Senior Center location saw the highest traffic with 1,832 ballots cast. The Burke County Board of Elections lobby followed with 1,357 voters. Rutherford College recorded 764 ballots, Hildebran Senior Center/Library had 751, and Glen Alpine saw 597 voters.
Absentee-by-mail voting remains limited. A total of 40 absentee ballots were returned during the reporting period, including 33 civilian and seven overseas voters. No military absentee ballots were reported.
Early voting numbers will be added to totals on Election Day as Burke County voters head to their assigned precincts Tuesday for the primary.
Tuesday is partisan primary election day, when registered voters choose who they want to be on the November General Election ballot.
Polling locations are separated into precincts. Burke County has a total of 31 precincts, all of which are active in this election because there are county, state, and federal races.
Registered Republicans must vote the Republican ballot. Registered Democrats must vote the Democrat ballot. Unaffiliated voters choose which ballot they wish to cast.
On election day, all voters must vote at their designated polling place. Polls are open on Tuesday from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
