Burke County residents who depend on the Catawba River and Lake James for drinking water, recreation, and local tourism will see new leadership guiding regional watershed protection, with Dr. Mo Drinkard named executive director of Catawba Riverkeeper.
Drinkard began work Dec. 1 after being selected from more than 100 applicants, according to the nonprofit’s board. She was offered the position by the organization’s search committee on Nov. 20.
“Mo’s education, experience, and passion are directly aligned with the organization’s mission and needs,” said Brandon Jones of Catawba Riverkeeper. “We are excited for her perspective and leadership in continuing the critical work of protecting our waters.”
Drinkard brings more than 20 years of experience in community development and environmental science. Catawba Riverkeeper officials said she has a track record of building conservation and education programs, strengthening nonprofit operations, and expanding community partnerships.
“I am honored and excited to offer leadership for the next chapter of Catawba Riverkeeper’s work,” Drinkard said. “I believe deeply in the mission and am fully invested in the health and future of this watershed.”
Catawba Riverkeeper works to preserve, protect, and restore the Catawba Wateree River Basin through advocacy, education, and public engagement. The basin includes Burke County, where river health affects everything from municipal water supplies to outdoor recreation and economic activity tied to Lake James and the Catawba River corridor.
One of the 10 largest riverkeeper organizations in the country, Catawba Riverkeeper reports more than 8,000 members across 26 counties in North and South Carolina. Drinkard is the organization’s fifth executive director and will lead a staff of 12 and a volunteer board of 22 members.
