Morganton Furniture Company Softball Team, 1947. Morganton Furniture Company started manufacturing furniture around 1906. It was located along the railroad, near present-day New Street. The company was started by James MacNaughton, N. H. Hall, and W. H. Hall, who had migrated from upstate New York. MacNaughton served as its first President. Arthur C. Chafee was employed to supervise construction, then stayed on as director. He became owner and CEO until he retired in 1941. Harry L. Shuey replaced him as President. In 1957 the company was acquired by Drexel Furniture Company. Employees of the company played softball in the local industrial league. Pictured at front is Marshall Carswell.
