The Caldwell Hotel on Jan. 24, 1940. On the corner of South Green and East Union streets in Morganton, it was constructed on the site of a house built in 1813 by John Caldwell and later the home of N.C. Gov. Tod Caldwell. The homeplace was demolished in 1921, and the 60-room hotel was completed at a cost of approximately $100,000 in 1922. Louis Asbury of Charlotte was the architect; Goode Construction Company of Charlotte was the builder. The first manager of the hotel was J. Henry Gaston. A highly anticipated grand opening was held June 15, 1922. The hotel remained in operation for more than 40 years. The hotel building was demolished ca 1964. A parking lot for the City of Morganton occupied the site until the construction of the Marquee Cinemas Movie Theater complex that opened in 2001. Contributed by the Burke County Public Library.
