With the heat dome expected to linger through the weekend, many families looking to stay cool while celebrating Independence Day may head to Wilson Creek.
For those planning to visit the popular destination, Caldwell County officials warn that the landscape has changed following Hurricane Helene, and that the limited areas suitable for swimming can still be dangerous, even for strong swimmers.
“The force of the storm shifted sections of the riverbed, altered the flow of the water, and carried large boulders, downed trees, and broken limbs downstream,” said Paige Counts, Caldwell County’s public information officer. “Many well‑known swimming and fishing areas have been reshaped or completely transformed.”
Swimming is only allowed in the Wilson Creek Day Use Area, from the beginning of Brown Mountain Beach Road to Craig Creek Road.
Areas north of Craig Creek Road are open only to fishing. Picnicking and swimming there are prohibited under updated North Carolina game land regulations.
Due to the reshaping of the creek, underwater areas can be unstable and unfamiliar, even to regular visitors. County officials request that families enjoy the creek with caution.
Following the drowning death of a 12-year-old on June 27, the county reiterated that Wilson Creek can be dangerous, and that the current can quickly overpower swimmers.
Caldwell provided tips for visiting the area:
Wear a life jacket or flotation device when swimming or playing in the water since the undertow can sweep visitors off their feet.
Don’t park in the roadway or anywhere that blocks traffic. Cars blocking traffic will be towed.
No overnight camping and no open campfires.
Alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
Cell phones have little to no reception in the area.
“In some areas, the water may look shallow and calm yet drop off suddenly into deep pools,” Counts warned. “Visitors should use extreme caution, wear proper safety gear, and never underestimate the force or hidden dangers of Wilson Creek.”
