A time capsule preserving a record of life in Burke County in 2026 was dedicated Friday, Oct. 2, at the Burke County Courthouse as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary observance.
Built by faculty and students at Western Piedmont Community College, the capsule is intended to remain sealed for 50 years and be opened in 2076, the United States’ 300th anniversary.
Its contents document the county’s people, places, institutions, traditions, achievements, and everyday experiences, according to the dedication program. The project is intended to connect today’s residents with those who will call Burke County home in 2076.
The ceremony’s program included remarks from Ed Phillips, chair of America 250 NC Burke County, and Jeff Brittain, chair of the Burke County Board of Commissioners, along with an official dedication by the county’s Register of Deeds. The Huffman Cornwell Foundation and the Rostan Family Foundation received special recognition in the program.
The time capsule will remain inside the courthouse at the Register of Deeds office.
America 250 Committee members are Ed Phillips, chair; Joel Welch, vice chair; Laurie Johnston, secretary; Waits Gordon; Corwin Keys; Bryant Lindsey; Linda Lindsey; Leslie McKesson; Butch McSwain; Sylvia Medford; Robert Patton; Mike Stroud; Mike Swan; and Charles Woodie.
The capsule serves as “a reminder that history is not only something we inherit, but something we create and preserve for those who come after us,” the program states.
