Members of the Col. Alexander Erwin Chapter and Quaker Meadows Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution attended the dedication of the Battle of Earleās Ford monument on Oct. 25 in Tryon, hosted by the Blue Ridge Chapter.
Representing Burke County were John Von Rohr and Kevin Allec of the Col. Alexander Erwin Chapter; Debbie Anderson and Becca Heacock of the Quaker Meadows DAR; and Bryant and Linda Lindsey of the Historic Burke Foundation. Lindsey is also a member of the Col. Alexander Erwin Chapter.
The new monument honors patriots from North Carolina and Georgia who defeated British and Loyalist dragoons near the site on July 15, 1780, during the American Revolution.
The front inscription reads:
āBattle of Earleās Ford, July 15, 1780. In memory of the North Carolina and Georgia Patriots who defeated British and Loyalist Dragoons near this site during the American Revolution.ā
The back inscription recognizes the units that fought in the battle, including six companies of Burke County militia commanded by Col. Charles McDowell ā the Patriot ancestor of both Becca Heacock and John Von Rohr.
In a related event the same day, Jordan Lowdermilk and Eric Minetola of the Col. Alexander Erwin Chapter participated in the āWinter Musterā at Fort Defiance in Lenoir, hosted by Lenoirās Rangers. Minetola served as Color Guard Commander, and Lowdermilk took part in the color guard.
