Republican challengers Shawn Freeman and Brian Barrier, and Democrat Wesley Hendrix entered the race this week, the final week of filing for the March 5 Primary. They join incumbents Johnnie Carswell, Scott Mulwee, and Jeff Brittain, all of whom filed last week.
Filing officially opened Monday, Dec. 4, at noon, and closed Friday, Dec. 15, at noon. The election is set for Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Early voting will take place Thursday, Feb. 15, until Saturday, March 2.
In addition to the commission candidates, several more folks tossed their hats in the ring for the county’s first-ever partisan Board of Education race.
Four seats on the board are open. Incumbents Seth Hunt (At-Large) and Wendi Craven (Eastern District) have filed and will be joined by fellow Republicans Susan C. Jones (West), Jamey Wycoff (At-Large), Brad Camp (West), Jeffrey Reid Beck (East), and Sonya Rockett (Central). Sharon Ivester Everhart, a Democrat, also filed for the At-Large seat.
In addition, State Sen. Warren Daniel (46th District) and State Rep. Hugh Blackwell (86th District) will defend their seats. John Ager, a Democrat from Fairview, has filed to run for Daniel’s seat. Democrat Gena Singleton filed for Blackwell's seat. Blackwell is in his eighth term and Daniel his seventh.
A number of state offices will be on the ballot in March as well, including U.S. House District 14; Governor; Lt. Governor; N.C. Supreme Court Judge Seat 6; Treasurer; Attorney General; Auditor; the Commissioners of Agriculture, Insurance, and Labor; Secretary of State; Superintendent of Public Instruction; N.C. Court of Appeals Seats 12, 14, and 15; N.C. State Senate District 46; N.C. House District 86; and N.C. District Court Judges District 36, Seats 8, 9, and 10.
There are three 2024 elections locally that will appear on the ballot next November but won’t require primaries: Rutherford College Town Council (three seats), Hildebran Town Council (two seats), and Soil and Water Conservation District.
