Housing development, Hurricane Helene recovery, and utility infrastructure will be among the major issues before the Morganton City Council when it meets Monday, Sept. 14.
The council will consider two separate agreements tied to the proposed Clover Ridge subdivision on Latimer Lane, including an economic development agreement involving Housing Stimulus Funding and a development agreement with Burke County and Western Carolina Developers LLC.
The agenda does not yet specify the number of homes, the amount of public funding involved, or the development timeline.
Council members also will consider budget amendments related to storm and FEMA expenses and receive a Hurricane Helene update.
In addition, the council is expected to call a second public hearing on an application for Community Development Block Grant disaster-recovery funding for a Morganton Parks and Recreation restoration project.
Other business includes an engineering contract for the city’s Drinking Water Resiliency Improvements Project, an agreement with Norfolk Southern Railway involving electrical conductors and a new 60-count fiber-optic cable, and utility-related contracts totaling more than $221,000 for substation foundation work and underground utility pole testing.
The city also is expected to accept a $200,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant toward the purchase of a knuckleboom truck and a $5,875 donation from the Morganton Service League to sponsor children’s shows at CoMMA.
The meeting begins at 5 p.m. at City Hall with a closed session covering attorney-client matters, confidential information, and economic development. Public comment will follow the closed session.
Rutherford College
The September agenda for the Rutherford College Town Council is a very light one.
The meeting will be held on Monday, Sept. 14, at Town Hal on Malcolm Boulevard.
The council is expected to continue examination of a potential contract with the Lenoir law firm of Wilson, Lackey, Rohr, and Hall to provide legal services for the town.
The council will also hear an update on the U.S. Postal Service situation in the town. Like Drexel, Rhodhiss, and Glen Alpine, the mailing address for most homes and businesses in Rutherford College is Connelly Springs.
Finally, the council will be discussing the ongoing use of a planner provided by the Western Piedmont Council of Governments.
