Burke County fans of fantasy films, video games, and live orchestral music have a regional concert option next weekend when Western Piedmont Symphony opens its Foothills Pops season with a program built around some of the genre’s best-known scores.
The professional orchestra of the western foothills will present “Foothills Pops: Symphony of the Shire” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center in Lenoir.
The concert is planned as a short regional trip from Burke County and offers music from familiar fantasy worlds including The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Hook, World of Warcraft, The Chronicles of Narnia and more.
Music Director Matthew Troy will lead the Western Piedmont Symphony in the season-opening Pops performance, which is designed as an orchestral adventure through film, television and gaming music.
“Western Piedmont Symphony is thrilled to kick off our 62nd Season with a trip to Middle Earth and beyond,” Troy said in the release. “A world of fantasy, imagination, distant lands, and epic music awaits.”
The concert is being promoted as more than a sit-and-listen event. Audience members are invited to come as they are or join the theme with costumes, cosplay or Renaissance-inspired attire. Organizers said attendees should not be surprised to see hobbits, wizards or other fantasy characters in the lobby.
The performance also marks the start of this season’s Foothills Pops Series, presented in partnership with the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center. The series is sponsored by the Broyhill Family Foundation and the Bernhardt Furniture Foundation, with additional support from Arts Culture Catawba and the North Carolina Arts Council.
Foothills Pops tickets are $33 to $58 for adults. Student tickets are $10 with a valid ID, with some section restrictions.
