The Paper’s office sits in a prime downtown location facing the historic courthouse square. One of the perks of our space is the convenience of local restaurants within walking distance of our front door.
Often, the newsroom and advertising staff celebrate “putting the paper to bed,” (newstalk for shipping each week’s issue off to the printer) on Fridays by walking to a downtown eatery to enjoy lunch together.
Most days, at least 16 restaurants within the historic downtown offer lunch options for local diners.
But what if you want to eat lunch in town on Monday? That can be more of a challenge.
The first workday of each week sees downtown Morganton’s lunch offerings reduced by a full 50%, with only eight restaurants offering midday hours. The situation is almost identical in downtown Valdese, where three of the town’s eight eateries close their doors for lunch on Mondays.
According to online food site The Tasting Table, restaurants, particularly small, independently owned establishments, often close on Mondays for financial reasons.
“Traditionally, Monday is the slowest day of the week. With many diners indulging in Saturday night dinner or Sunday brunch, they're not likely to follow up their weekend extravagances with yet another pricy, calorie-heavy restaurant meal,” they explain.
In addition to low customer demand, other factors influencing restaurant owners’ decisions to close may include allowing a day of rest for themselves and employees, and finding a routine time for scheduling maintenance and upkeep.
In Morganton, restaurant options for lunch on the first day of the workweek include Buck’s Pizza, The Grind Cafe, Swede’s Cafe, Limbertwig Cafe, Pat’s Snack Bar, Uncle Eee’s, Food Matters Cafe, and Ono Poke Bowl.
Valdese restaurants that serve lunch on Mondays are Chubby’s, Los Compadres, Myra’s, Taqueria El Mana, and Twin Brothers Pizza.
We’ve provided a handy reference guide for lunch options in Morganton and Valdese. We suggest you cut this out and post it on your refrigerator at home or in the office to help guide you when you’re looking for lunch choices.
