The Foothills Chapter of the North Carolina Native Plant Society will host a community BioBlitz at Lake James State Park on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The free event — which is open to anyone interested in discovering more about the biodiversity of the N.C. Foothills — will offer participants an opportunity to explore the natural diversity of Lake James State Park while helping document the plants, animals, fungi, insects, and other organisms that call the park home.
A Lake James State Park Ranger will highlight the history and ecology of the Lake James area before attendees head into the park to make observations and record species using the free iNaturalist app. Native plant prizes will be provided, along with refreshments.
The Foothills Chapter of the N.C. Native Plant Society is a recently formed chapter that serves Burke County and the surrounding foothills region. The chapter hosts educational programs, hikes, field activities, and other events designed to connect people with the state’s native plants and natural communities.
Advance registration is required at northcarolinanativeplantsociety.wildapricot.org, and those planning to attend should dress for outdoor conditions. Minors are encouraged to participate, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
