Archaeology Day connects Burke County residents with local history

Burke County residents brought pieces of their own history to the table on Saturday, March 7, during a hands-on archaeology event that connected personal finds with the region’s past.

Visitors to the History Museum of Burke County took part in an Archaeology Day led by Dr. David Moore, an archaeologist affiliated with Warren Wilson College and the lead archaeologist on the Joara archaeological project in Burke County.

Moore worked one-on-one with attendees to help identify and interpret artifacts brought from home. Items ranged from family discoveries to long kept curiosities, each with its own story and questions. He provided context and insight into the objects, helping participants better understand where the items may have come from and how they fit into local history.

After the artifact review session, attendees joined a guided tour of the museum’s archaeological collections. The tour offered a closer look at artifacts uncovered through professional excavations and highlighted the broader story of the region’s past.

Organizers said the event created a unique blend of community engagement and expert interpretation, allowing residents to connect their own discoveries with the larger historical narrative of Burke County and surrounding areas.

The event also highlighted the role archaeology plays in preserving and interpreting local history, turning everyday objects into pieces of a larger story.
