UNC Health Blue Ridge says thanks to Mac McCrary and Mike Bridges

UNC Health Blue Ridge proudly celebrated the retirement of two of its most dedicated and impactful board members, Mike Bridges and Mac McCrary, during a heartfelt evening event attended by colleagues, friends, and community leaders.

Together, Bridges and McCrary have devoted more than 70 years of combined service to the health care system, guiding UNC Health Blue Ridge through transformative milestones and unprecedented challenges.

Their leadership has left a lasting legacy on the organization and the broader community.

President and CEO Gary Paxson opened the evening by recognizing the honorees’ unwavering commitment and visionary leadership. “Good leaders always strive to leave an organization in better condition than when they started,” Paxson said. “Both of these gentlemen can rest with pride in achieving this milestone by a wide margin.”

The evening featured tributes from current and former Blue Ridge leaders, including current Board Chairman Jim Rostan and past President & CEO Kathy Bailey.

Rostan highlighted the pair’s instrumental roles in the 2012 merger of Grace Hospital and Valdese General Hospital, the creation of the Valdese outpatient center in 2014, and the strategic alignment with UNC Health in 2021.

Bailey reflected on their leadership qualities, likening their service to the virtues of “brains, courage, and heart.”

She praised Bridges for his 35-plus years of service, including his calm leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and his support of community initiatives.

McCrary, who joined the board in 1990 —the same year as Bridges—was recognized for his financial stewardship, governance innovation, and passionate advocacy for patient care.

McCrary briefly stepped away from board service following the Grace-Valdese merger to lead the UNC Health Foundation, but was quickly invited to rejoin due to his valued expertise and leadership.

Though he would never seek recognition for this, it is important to share this part of his journey, underscoring his quiet dedication and the respect he earned from peers.

The evening concluded with a toast led by Paxson: “To Mike Bridges and Mac McCrary, whose leadership and dedication have left an indelible mark on all of us at UNC Health Blue Ridge. May your retirement be filled with joy, relaxation, and the same passion you brought to your work.”

The celebration served as a fitting tribute to two individuals whose influence will continue to shape the future of health care in the region for years to come.
