The Burke County Tourism Development Authority was recently presented with a Platinum Award by the North Carolina Travel Industry Association for the design, layout, and functionality of the Burke County Visitors Center.
The Burke Visitor Center opened Oct. 9, 2023, at 140 N. Sterling St. in downtown Morganton after having shared space with the Burke County Chamber of Commerce since 2010.
With an on-street location and larger signage, the Burke Visitor Center saw an 81% increase in visitors from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2024, over the same period prior to the move.
Ed Phillips, CEO of the Burke County Tourism Development Authority said, “The Burke Visitors Center was designed to represent all of the tourism assets throughout Burke County. The large wall map and brochure displays are in an open and inviting area that welcomes visitors to explore the many places in Burke County. Visitors stay longer and interact with the staff in a more personal way which is the ultimate in hospitality and service.”
Custom furniture sourced from local craftsmen reflects the rich tradition of Appalachian furniture-making while creating a comfortable sitting area for guests, Phillips said.
The walls are adorned with maps, vintage signs and photographs of Burke County, presented in a gallery style.
The center also includes a boardroom in the space, which is utilized by various nonprofits for meetings and events.
The award submission stated the location isa “visually striking, multifunctional Visitor Center that is inviting, informative, and easily accessible for the guests.”
