New business formation picked up across Burke and Caldwell counties in September, reversing some of August’s slowdown and pushing the two-county region close to 1,000 new registrations for the year.
North Carolina Secretary of State data show 109 new entities registered with Burke or Caldwell County addresses during September, including 62 in Burke County and 47 in Caldwell County. See the full roster of new businesses online at thepaper.media.
September’s 109 registrations were up from 93 in August, an increase of about 17%. The month remained below July’s 115 filings and June’s 134, the highest monthly total recorded across Burke and Caldwell counties so far in 2026.
Through Sept. 30, the two counties had recorded 964 new business registrations in 2026 — 526 in Burke County and 438 in Caldwell County.
This month’s report does not include business dissolutions, administrative dissolutions or withdrawals pending verification of the statistics supplied through the N.C. Secretary of State’s business records. As a result, no September net-gain calculation is included.
Limited liability companies again overwhelmingly dominated business formation. Ninety-five of the 109 registrations — about 87% — were LLCs. Another 11 were business corporations, two were professional limited liability companies, and one was a nonprofit.
That filing mix is consistent with previous months, when LLCs have accounted for most new entities created in both counties.
BURKE COUNTY
Burke County produced 62 new registrations, accounting for about 57% of September’s two-county activity.
Morganton remained the county’s business formation center, with 36 registrations carrying Morganton addresses. Hildebran had eight, Connelly Springs seven, and Valdese six. Three Burke registrations used Hickory addresses, while one each listed Lenoir and Newland. The Paper used the county designation in the Secretary of State record when mailing city and county boundaries differed.
Construction, property and home services remained prominent.
Among the new registrations were Cornerstone Custom Homes and Cattle, Kelly Electrical Contracting, Burke SiteWorks, NC Premier Plumbing, LL Custom Renovations, Rad’s Landworks, Prospectors Land & Resource Management, MJ Professional Landscaping, and Gragg Legacy Construction.
Property-related ventures included Triple S Designs & Holdings, FA Property Management, and Bark Ridge Retreat.
The roster also showed a broader mix of professional and technology-oriented businesses.
Always On AI Solutions, Tradebridge Decision Intelligence and Orion Digital of North America registered in Morganton, while Abernethy Innovative Solutions used a Hickory address in Burke County. Professional and health-related registrations included Laurel Creek Veterinary Relief PLLC, Bloom Behavioral Therapy PLLC, and Streamline Fitness and Wellness.
Other Burke startups ranged from bookkeeping and transportation to tire service, home furnishings, agriculture, creative businesses and retail.
Burke’s September filing mix included 50 LLCs, nine business corporations, two professional LLCs, and one nonprofit.
CALDWELL COUNTY
Caldwell County recorded 47 new entities, with activity again heavily concentrated around Lenoir and Granite Falls.
Twenty-seven of Caldwell’s registrations listed Lenoir addresses and 12 listed Granite Falls. Hickory accounted for three, Hudson two, and Collettsville, Connelly Springs, and Semora one each.
Caldwell’s September roster was especially strong in construction, real estate, and property holdings.
New registrations included RFW Construction, JG Remod, Lion Ridge Construction, Sagui Construction, and RBR Construction. Property and investment entities included Busy Bee Realty, Windy Mountain Properties, JL Properties of Hickory, L&M Residential Holdings, Black River Holding Co., LNB Heritage Estate, HC Property Holdings, and Art Holdings and Legacy.
Transportation and logistics also appeared repeatedly, with Haul Y’all Transport, Fonseca Truck, and Direct Delivery Service among the month’s registrations.
The county also generated a mix of consulting, manufacturing-related and consumer ventures, including Southeastern Biomedical Associates, Noble Engine Works, WNC Packaging, C&C Calibrations, The Honey Comb Beauty, DrDrum’s Luxury Laundry, and Blue Ridge Tobacco & Vape.
Caldwell’s filing mix was even more concentrated in LLCs than Burke’s: 45 of its 47 September registrations were LLCs, with the remaining two organized as business corporations.
A BROADER RURAL TREND
The local numbers fit a longer-running North Carolina trend in which entrepreneurial activity has expanded beyond the state’s major metropolitan areas.
The state reported that the state’s designated Main Street communities recorded 308 new businesses, 2,393 new jobs, and more than $507 million in downtown investment during the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Secretary of State registrations are not traditional business licenses. They document the creation or registration of LLCs, corporations, and other legal entities. A filing does not establish that a company has opened a storefront, hired employees, or begun generating revenue.
