Hildebran 15U baseball headed to state

The host Hildebran-Icard 15U all-star baseball team won the Tarheel League District 1 tournament on July 13 at East Burke Middle School, defeating Shelby in three games. The team was Burke County's lone district champion in baseball or softball this summer.
After rain halted the action July 12 with Hildebran leading, 5-3, in game one, Hildebran hung on to take the opener the next morning, 10-7. Shelby then forced the do-or-die game with an 11-9 win, but Hildebran claimed the nail-biting finale, 8-7, to claim a back-to-back district title and advance to next week’s state tournament in Hickory.
Pictured are players Landon Harris, Trevor Bentley, Hank Lowman, Wyatt Bonorden, Kenny Morrison, DeMarcus Ault, Kam O’Dell, John Snow, Gavin Perkins, Nathan Fortenberry, and Nate Burns. The team is coached by Cody Townsend, who is assisted by Shawn O’Dell, Eric Lowman, and Waylon Bonorden.
“(We) battled to the end,” Townsend said. “We won because we played solid defense and kept our heart in the game. Nathan Fortenberry (our catcher and lone returning player from last year’s district title team) was awesome and toughed out the heat for a total of 17 innings today. And we had great pitching from Wyatt, Landon, Nate, and DeMarcus.”
Hildebran opens play in the eight-team state tournament versus host Hickory on July 25 at 4 p.m. at Lenoir-Rhyne University. Some games in the event are also being hosted by P.D. Fowler Field in Hickory.
