East Burke varsity football player Jesiah Rees (4) tries to get past one of Foard’s defensive players during the Cavaliers’ 34-26 home victory on Aug. 28. Rees caught four passes for 29 yards and two touchdowns to go with a fumble recovery on defense, while EB quarterback Carter Bennett had 175 all-purpose yards (19 carries, 91 yards, two TDs; 9-of-22 passing, 84 yards, two TDs) and RJ Williams ran for the Cavs’ remaining score as they evened their record at 1-1 on the season. Cash Oyola added an interception on defense that led to a TD early in the fourth quarter.

East Burke’s win over Foard on Aug. 28 in Icard was the first for Jonathan Winkler as the team’s head coach. A 2000 EB graduate, Winkler was the defensive coordinator at Draughn for four years before taking the job at his alma mater on June 30. Winkler is the 13th head football coach in EB history, but he is the first Cavalier alumnus to hold the position.
