Burke hosts WYAA hoops tourneys; 10U girls win title

The Burke County Recreation Department hosted two Western Youth Athletic Association (WYAA) girls tournaments from Feb. 27 to March 1, with the 8U event taking place at Mountain View Elementary School in Morganton and the 10U portion taking place at the R.O. Huffman Center in Drexel. The tournaments included 10 total teams, including two Burke County all-star squads competing in both age groups.
The Burke County No. 2 10U squad defeated McDowell County in a close championship game, with Marleigh Brown earning MVP honors and Brooklyn Brown joining her on the all-tournament team. The Burke No. 1 all-stars placed third, with Kennedy Thomas and Peyton Ruggles being named all-tournament.
The Burke County No. 1 8U all-stars finished second, slipping past a tough Alexander County team in the semifinals before a 17-16 finals loss against McDowell.
This weekend, the WYAA boys tournaments are being hosted by Burke County (10U, in Drexel), Hickory (8U), and Shelby (12U), with 15U boys set for next weekend (March 13-15) in Hickory.
The Burke County No. 1 8U runner-up squad included players Caroline Stewart, McKinley Benjamin, Natalie Thao, Remi Milligan, Marielle Miller, Rainah Hill, Hannalyn Smith, Addyson Johnson, Madison Myers, and Stella Robinson. The team was coached by Kristen Carter (head) and Jonathan Carter (assistant).
