EDITOR’s NOTE: Following the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, April 21, The Paper reached out to the pastoral staff at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Morganton, seeking their thoughts on the passing of the pontiff and its impact.
What impact will the death of Pope Francis have on the Roman Catholic Church around the world?
It is a time of great uncertainty for the Church. Not knowing who will be elected and the direction of where they will take the Church. It is also a time of great sadness for all people. He was influential for all, not just Catholics.
How will the death of Pope Francis affect the parish of St. Charles and its parishioners?
Pretty much the same as the people around the world. Sadness and uncertainty.
What do you think Pope Francis’ lasting legacy will be? How will he be remembered by both Catholics and non-Catholics alike?
He will be remembered for his understanding and true love for the world. He believed everyone was equal. All people are deserving of the love and grace of God.
He showed the world that we could all work together and find peace in all we do. His love for God and his faith will be forever remembered.
Taking after his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi, Pope Francis was a compassionate leader admired for his humility, simplicity, and reverence for the beauty of creation.
May his example motivate and inspire us all to seek a deeper relationship with God and to see the face of Christ in all those we encounter.
What are your own personal thoughts on the death of the leader of the world church?
It saddens us that we have lost such a great leader. He had such compassion and love for everyone. We hope the next Pope will be like Pope Francis in his thoughts, love, and leadership.
The pastoral staff at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church includes Father Ken Whittington, pastor; and deacons, Miguel Sebastian, Ed Konarski, and John Martino.
