UNC Health Blue Ridge honored its employed veterans and all service members on Friday, Nov. 10, with a special ceremony featuring retired U.S. Navy Chaplain Charles Richard Duncan of Hickory.
He asked veterans in the audience to stand and thanked them for their service, saying, “You have brought life and freedom to your fellow Americans, and every citizen of this great nation owes you respect and gratitude.”
The Rev. Duncan, an ordained minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, went on active duty as a Navy chaplain in 1974 and served in Japan, the Philippines, Iceland, and more.
He developed and implemented training for the Navy Chaplain Corps at Naval Education and Training Command, Pensacola, Fla.; Division Director, Plans, Policies, and Professional Development Division, Navy Chief of Chaplains, Washington, D.C.; Fleet Chaplain, United States Naval Forces, Europe (NATO), London, United Kingdom; and Senior Chaplain, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.
After 28 years as a chaplain, Duncan retired from the Navy as a Captain in 2002. His personal military decorations include two Legion of Merit Medals, two Meritorious Service Medals, and three Navy Commendation Medals.
Pastor Duncan and his wife, Charlotte, moved back home to North Carolina in 2013, where they reside lakeside in Hickory.
