Burke County’s two golf courses made it through Tropical Storm Helene’s wrath better than might have been expected, though Mimosa Hills Golf Club was hit harder and will be closed until next week.
At Mimosa, head pro Jimmy Piercy on Tuesday said about 60 trees were down around the property but noted that there was no flood damage on the 95-year-old Donald Ross design, unlike less than a mile up Golf Course Road where Silver Creek flooding spilled into the shopping center and across into Shuey Park.
The club’s fourball tournament is scheduled for this weekend and appears likely to be postponed.
Silver Creek Golf Club management on Tuesday said the course would reopen on Wednesday. It took minimal tree damage and experienced some minor flooding on holes No. 12 and 13 that quickly subsided.
Power was restored at the clubhouse late Monday, and the course — which drains well given its slope — was not even enforcing a 90-degree rule in the fairways.
“The golf course is re-opening with all 18 holes playable and in good shape,” according to a Silver Creek email newsletter. “Drinking water is still out, and the grill is closed until that is restored. We do have snacks and bottled beverages available.
“A huge shout-out goes to our maintenance crew who got to work right away and did an amazing job clearing trees, branches, and other debris off the cart paths, fairways, and greens.”
