PICTURE BURKE PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Fred Tillman Hull (1908-1994) was born in Cleveland County and lived in Morganton for 62 years. He was the owner of Hull Furniture for many years and a former employee of Burke Furniture. When he was 8 years old, his brothers gave him an autoharp, which he continued to play into adulthood. He also played the piano, guitar, violin, banjo, and mandolin. After he was invited to participate in the Bascam Lamar Lunsford Folk Festival in Asheville, he was awarded the title of National Folk Artist Autoharp champion. Fred was a charter member of the Morganton Optimist Club. He shared his life with his wife, Beulah Hunt Hull (1913-2011), and their three daughters, Jean, Jackie, and Phyllis. This image was submitted by the History Museum of Burke County (Mike Smith) to Picture Burke, a digital photograph preservation project of the Burke County Public Library.
