The first Monday of the month brings a multitude of meetings — and an obvious opportunity for alliteration, which we will leave behind after this sentence.Â
In Morganton, City Council members will consider an ordinance that will allow for a Downtown Social District. Nearly 75% of respondents to The Paper's poll on the subject said they were in favor of a social district. Tonight we'll will find out how Morganton's elected leaders feel about it. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at city hall, 305 E. Union St., Suite A100.
The social district isn't the only topic that's been discussed for several years. Over in Valdese, the Town Council has been weighing the pros and cons of how to best address the need to update its fire and police facilities. After steps forward and then back, the council is poised to move forward and select a contractor for the project. The decision on whether to build separate or joint facilities is still an open question. The council will meet at 6 p.m. at town hall, 102 Massel Ave. SW.Â
Burke County officials have also long discussed the need for more space for its public health building on Parker Road. The talk is getting closer to action. The commissioners will likely decide at today's pre-agenda meeting whether to accept a bid from the design firm of Holland & Hamrick to renovate the building. Remodeling cost estimate is $9.6 million. The commissioners will meet at 3 p.m. in the commissioners' meeting room, 110 N. Green. St.Â
The Rutherford College Town Council will vote on its 2025-26 fiscal year budget tonight at its 7 p.m. meeting at town hall, 980 Malcolm Blvd.Â
