Burke County health providers and patients got a measure of relief this week after Gov. Josh Stein reversed recent Medicaid reimbursement cuts that had threatened services statewide. The rollback restores payment rates that were reduced in October, easing immediate pressure on hospitals, clinics, and behavioral health providers.
But the fix is temporary. State health officials warn Medicaid still faces a significant funding shortfall that could cause the program to run out of money early next year without legislative action. For rural providers operating on thin margins, uncertainty — even for a few months — can affect staffing, services, and patient care.
As lawmakers continue to clash over budgets in Raleigh, Burke County providers are left watching closely. The outcome will shape access to care for thousands of local residents who rely on Medicaid-funded services every day.
