Historic Gaston Chapel AME Church held celebrations in October of 2023 “Celebrating 160 Years: the Journey Continues.” Gaston Chapel is Morganton's second oldest church building and the oldest historically Black church in the county. The church, located at 100 Bouchelle St., was named for the Rev. Mose Gaston, an early AME minister (1863-1866). This brick structure replaced an earlier frame church sited on land acquired from Gov. Tod Caldwell. Philo G. Harbison, a local African American businessman and carpenter, led its construction in 1910-1911 with labor supplied largely by skilled carpenters and bricklayers in the congregation. The church was named to the National Register of Historical Places in December 1984. In 2003, the church was renovated, and a fellowship hall was added. Judy Willis (Webb’s Studio) provided this image to Picture Burke, a digital photograph preservation project of the NC Room of the Burke County Public Library.
