Charles Williams, principal of Jimmy Draughn High School, has been honored as Principal of the Year for the 2024-25 school year, a recognition that not only celebrates his leadership but also highlights his unwavering commitment to student success and collaboration within the school community.
Williams will now represent the district at the regional level, a testament to his impactful career spanning more than three decades in public education.
“It’s very humbling to know that my colleagues — who understand the challenges and responsibilities of this role firsthand — see value in the work I do,” he said. I have always tried to be a resource to help and support those who I work with, and I appreciate those who have done the same for me.”
During his long career, Williams has held positions at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. He started with BCPS in 1991 as a daycare worker and went on to work as a teacher assistant, substitute teacher, bus driver, non-certified EL teacher, classroom teacher, instructional coach, assistant principal, and principal.
Williams has served as principal at Ray Childers Elementary, Chesterfield Elementary, Mountain View Elementary, Valdese Elementary, and Draughn High.
“The most important constant is that students remain at the center of everything we do, just as it can be found within the BCPS strategic plan,” Williams said. “No matter how much policies, technologies, or expectations evolve, the heart of education is still about helping students grow, learn, and succeed. Our mission has always been, and will continue to be, focused on doing what’s best for the students in our care.”
Superintendent Dr. Mike Swan applauded Williams for his work in the school system.
“Mr. Williams is very deserving of this recognition from his peers. He has a passion not only for education but also for his students, especially those who are from tough backgrounds. We know he will represent us well at the regional Principal of the Year level,” Swan said.
Williams thanked the district and his colleagues for their ongoing support.
“I am fortunate to have a tremendous support system within BCPS and some tremendous colleagues that I depend on daily. We work together as a team. Our role is extremely challenging and having a close network is crucial.”
The announcement for the regional principal winner was scheduled for January 2025 but has been rescheduled to a later date due to Hurricane Helene.
