Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute’s Information Technology-Cybersecurity program has earned designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense from the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.
Dr. Brian Morris, dean of business, technology, and engineering programs, accepted the certification on behalf of the college during the annual CAE in Cybersecurity Community Symposium.
The designation follows a lengthy application process and requires programs to meet rigorous standards. The certification is designed to ensure students receive a quality education based on current national standards and that graduates are prepared with the knowledge and skills needed to work in cyber defense.
The national designation comes as CCC&TI’s Information Technology program welcomes a new director, John Early.
Early, a Western North Carolina native, brings more than 20 years of experience in information technology, curriculum development, and teaching to the role.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science and a master’s degree in technology systems, with a focus in information security, from East Carolina University.
Early’s professional background includes work in IT operations, cybersecurity, compliance, and strategic planning across a multi-county region. He also has experience in systems administration and programming, as well as leadership roles in infrastructure, security, and data initiatives.
“What really pulled me into the field was the ability to solve real problems using technology,” Early said. “I’ve always appreciated that IT is a field where you’re constantly learning, adapting, and improving, and that has kept me engaged throughout my career.”
Early said his background in both industry and education has prepared him for his new role at CCC&TI.
“That combination of real-world experience and teaching has really shaped my approach to developing future IT professionals,” Early said. “I was especially interested in the opportunity to help grow and shape CCC&TI’s Information Technology programs and pathways. By bringing together industry-relevant curriculum, hands-on learning, and a strong alignment with employer needs, CCC&TI is in a great position to make a real impact in the region, and I wanted to be part of that.”
Early said CCC&TI’s programs, pathways, and student resources make it possible for people at different stages of life and career to succeed in information technology.
