Early voting begins in Burke County with 282 ballots cast

Burke County voters cast 282 ballots in the opening days of early voting, offering the first measurable sign of how engaged residents may be in the 2026 primary season.

Of those ballots, 264 were cast in person on Thursday, Feb. 12, according to data from the North Carolina State Board of Elections. An additional eight absentee ballots had been accepted as of Feb. 3. With 60,352 registered voters in Burke County as of Jan. 31, that puts turnout so far at 0.47%.

Republican voters accounted for 182 of Thursday’s in-person ballots, compared with 82 cast by Democratic voters. No ballots were recorded under “Other” affiliations for that day. Among early voting locations, the Senior Center led with 92 ballots cast, followed by the Burke County Board of Elections lobby with 73. Glen Alpine, Hildebran and Rutherford College sites reported 28, 37 and 34 ballots, respectively.

While less than one half of one percent may appear modest, early voting totals often serve as a barometer for overall participation. Historically, turnout tends to build as Election Day approaches, particularly if competitive races or high interest issues are on the ballot.

Absentee participation remains limited but bears watching. Four civilian absentee ballots and four overseas ballots had been accepted, with 14 civilian ballots issued.

Early turnout patterns can influence campaign strategy, volunteer deployment and advertising decisions in the final days before Election Day. They also provide voters with insight into how their community is responding to the ballot.
