Burke County student-athletes preparing for summer and fall sports can receive free required physicals next month through an event hosted by UNC Health Blue Ridge.
The hospital system’s Cleared to Compete event will provide free sports physicals on Saturday, May 16, at the Medical Office Building on the Morganton campus. Registration is open from April 20 through May 10 for middle and high school students.
The physicals are required for participation in Burke County Public Schools athletics, as well as for many summer camps and recreation programs.
“We hope parents will take advantage of getting free physicals for their children who are rising sixth graders through high school,” said Danette Brackett, vice president and chief external affairs officer at UNC Health Blue Ridge.
The screenings will be conducted by UNC Health Blue Ridge’s Sports Medicine Department and include a full evaluation, such as medical history review, vision screening, height and weight check, strength and range of motion assessment, and a general physical exam.
The event will also include EKG screenings for rising sixth, ninth, and 11th grade students.
“Because we offer EKGs, we’ve caught some serious health issues with our athletes, such as heart defects,” said Jonathan Williams, director of rehabilitation and sports medicine. “We’ve also caught some not-so-serious issues, such as kids needing glasses.”
The event is open to students attending public, private and charter schools, as well as those who are home-schooled.
