U.S. President John F. Kennedy spoke at Rice University in Houston on Sept. 12, 1962. During his address, Kennedy declared that the country would attempt to land a man on the moon before the end of the decade, a goal that was fulfilled when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission in 1969.
