Burke County residents have until March 7 to nominate someone whose leadership and service have quietly shaped the community for decades.
The Rotary Club of Morganton is seeking nominations for its 2025 Distinguished Person of the Year, an honor the club says recognizes individuals whose contributions “transcend politics and personalities” and reflect Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.”
The award dates to 1948, when it was established by former Rotary president J.D. Fitz, who later received the honor himself in 1972.
Since then, recipients have joined what club leaders describe as an exclusive fellowship of men and women whose vision and work have strengthened Burke County for more than 70 years.
Nominees must be Burke County citizens at least 18 years old, of “impeccable character,” and must have made a significant positive impact on the community. Previous recipients are not eligible.
“Rotary reminds us that service is not just something we do — it’s who we are,” Rotary President Tyler Barnhardt said in a statement. “As we open up nominations this year, please think about whom in your network has proven that service is always a part of their core being. We look forward to honoring the Distinguished Person of the Year for 2025. We appreciate all nominations of individuals who live lives that reflect Rotary’s highest ideals: integrity, compassion, and a commitment to making our community stronger.”
The Rotary Club’s annual recognition has long been considered one of Morganton’s highest civic honors, spotlighting residents whose steady leadership and volunteerism often occur outside the public eye.
The club maintains a website recognizing past honorees at www.morgantonrotary.org/person-of-the-year, outlining the history and purpose of the award.
Those wishing to nominate someone are asked to submit a letter including the nominee’s name, background and specific achievements that have improved the lives of area residents. Organizers encourage detailed descriptions of the individual’s community impact.
Letters should be mailed to:
Deborah Jones, Secretary
Rotary Club of Morganton
P.O. Box 294
Morganton, NC 28680
Nominations may also be submitted online through a link provided by the club. Questions can be directed to heydebjones@gmail.com.
