At the Alva Theatre in October 1938, local photographer Walt Greene sponsored a contest featuring photographs and motion pictures of local children. He called it “Walt Greene’s Baby Show: Future Belles and Beaux.” Photographs of the children were displayed outside the theatre. Ads in the newspaper promoted matinee showings of “Natural Color Motion Picture of Morganton and Burke County Babies and Children” in the Alva Theatre from Oct. 3-5, 1938. The public was encouraged to come and see the show, then vote for their choice. The winner would receive “three handsome prizes.” This image was created by Greene Studio and submitted by the History Museum of Burke County and the N.C. Room (John T. Oxford Jr.’s Walt Greene Collection) to Picture Burke, a digital photograph preservation project of the Burke County Public Library.
