The Dutch Club was a prominent social organization in Burke County. It was established as a couples’ social club, bringing together civic leaders, business owners, and their spouses for monthly dinner meetings and entertainment. Members took turns hosting monthly social gatherings at their homes and often featured formal or semi-formal dinners, guest speakers, and musical programs. Special gatherings, like this Halloween costume party held in October 1948, were held at local landmarks like the Mimosa Golf Club, the Morganton Community House, or the National Guard Armory. Pictured (from left) are Gladys Pitts (in mask) with her husband, Ralph Pitts; Jim Connelly and his wife, Mabel; and Kat Arney and Dr. Bill Arney. This image was provided by David Connelly, son of Jim and Mabel Connelly, to Picture Burke, a digital photograph preservation project of the N.C. Room of the Burke County Public Library.
