The State Board of Elections and State Auditor Dave Boliek appointed new boards of election in all 100 counties Tuesday, but the makeup of Burke’s board won’t change much.
Four of the five previous members will remain on the board, including Anthony Iovino, a Republican, who was named the new chair. Iovino replaces the previous chairman, Democrat L.H. Kirksey.
Republicans now hold 3-2 majorities in all 100 counties.
Iovino and fellow Republican Sandra Walker return for Burke and will be joined by new Republican board member Donna Wojcik.
The board’s two Democrat members, Beverly Carlton and Linda Walker, also return.
Elections Director Kenny Rhyne said the new members will be sworn in on July 22 and are not serving until then. “Right now, there is no active board,” Rhyne said.
This year marks the first time partisan control of the state boards has flipped since 2016.
Legislation passed last year switched the authority to appoint new board members from the governor’s office to the auditor. Former Gov. Roy Cooper and Gov. Josh Stein filed suit to stop the move, but the Supreme Court upheld the legislation.
It may not be important, but it seems odd that there will not be an active Burke County Board of Elections until the week following the close of the 2025 municipal elections filing period.. The filing period is from July 7 through noon, July 18.

How handy is that? Will it just slip by?
