New Burke Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) Chair Kristin Watson at Monday’s community meeting.
MICA BANKS / THE PAPERBurke County’s Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) is transitioning into its next phase of Hurricane Helene recovery by hiring a part-time executive director, a move leaders say will strengthen coordination as millions in the community are still in need.
The job opening was announced at Monday’s Burke LTRG community meeting by the group’s new chair, Kristin Watson.
Watson said it is a paid position and could lead to an opportunity for full-time employment.
The listing on employment search engine website Indeed shows that the job offers an annual salary of $30,000.
Following the resignation of Burke LTRG’s former chair, Kathy Bailey, Watson — former vice chair — was nominated as the next chair at the meeting. The executive committee approved the nomination.
Alicia Connelly was nominated and approved as the executive committee’s new vice chair.
The Burke chapter is one of many LTRGs formed in response to the devastation of Hurricane Helene. The goal is for faith-based groups, nonprofits, government agencies, businesses, and volunteers to come together and help residents recover while also preparing for future disasters.
Executive committee member Marty Sohovich shared that the group has received about $412,000 in funding from both a Dogwood Health Trust grant and a North Carolina Community Foundation grant.
Sohovich said there have only been about $5,000 in expenses thus far, most of which were “office-type expenses” to get the group up and running.
There is currently a $406,000 balance, Sohovich said, which will be used appropriately for the group’s mission.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) liaison Martha Lodridge also shared resources for those in the community struggling with the ongoing effects of Helene. Resources included a grant for clean water and hotlines for Helene victims or those who are suicidal.
Families that need clean water can apply for a grant through the USDA Household Water Well Systems program. Visit groundwater.org/water-well-wish/application/ for more information.
The Hope 4 NC helpline is specifically for those struggling in the aftermath of Helene. It is available 24/7. The number is 1-855-587-3463.
The suicide and crisis lifeline can be reached at any time by dialing 988.
