The 5th annual Lake James Watershed Symposium will be held Feb. 17 in Morganton at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. The free event will feature presentations and discussions on Lake James water quality and watershed protection efforts.
Lake James is fed by the Catawba River and its North Fork, the Linville River, Paddy’s Creek, and numerous smaller tributaries. Many of them sustained historic damage during Helene. The health of those tributaries has a direct effect on the condition of the lake itself.
Every Friday from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Lake James Environmental Association posts the results of water quality studies conducted throughout the week in the lake and its tributaries.
Catawba Riverkeeper’s Sophie McCarthy and Foothills Conservancy’s Brittany Watkins lead the first Wilderness Watershed Adventure last summer and is making preparations for this year’s trip Aug. 3-8.Â
