Pictured is the R.C. Shuping family during a family reunion on July 3, 1938. Robert Columbus Shuping was born in Rowan County in 1852. He married Mary Ellen Mace in Burke County on Feb. 10, 1879. She was a Burke County native, the daughter of John and Sallie Keller Mace. The Shupings lived near the foot of Burkemont Mountain in the Salem area. They had six children: Charles Alexander, Jacob Marvin, Lilly Mae (Wilson), Mary “Mattie” M. (Epley), Laura Ella (Mace), and John W. The family patriarch, R. C. Shuping died on April 19, 1932, before this photograph was taken. His wife, Mary Ellen, died in 1946. The parents and many of their children are buried in the cemetery at the Salem United Methodist Church. The History Museum of Burke County and the N.C. Room (John T. Oxford Jr.’s Walt Greene Collection) provided this image to Picture Burke.
