Trump no respect for separation of powers

TO THE EDITOR:

Last week President Donald J. Trump delivered his State of the Union address to Congress. For me, “Union” means the United States of America: blue states, red states, every state. This is not how the President looks at our country.

For President Trump, blue states are to be punished. Federal funds appropriated by Congress can be denied. Cities in blue states can be invaded by ICE and Customs and Border Patrol agents, and, in Minneapolis, this meant the murder of American citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

The President yelled at Democrats and publicly humiliated Supreme Court justices. Most importantly, Americans are worried about kitchen table issues: the economy. inflation, jobs, and healthcare. These are real life concerns and policies that the President failed to address.

Our elections in November are under threat from this president. He has already threatened to nationalize federal elections. This, along with attacks on Iran, is clearly unconstitutional.

Our Founding Fathers gave the power to run elections to the states and the power to declare war to Congress. This is known as separation of powers: three equal branches of the government to ensure that the United States of America would have no kings.
