Burke County Public Schools will once again have a remote learning day. No word yet on the plans for Thursday and Friday.
New Dimensions Charter School will operate on a 2-hour delay on Wednesday.
Western Piedmont Community College will be back to regular operations on Wednesday.
From all available accounts, all governmental offices (county and municipal) will follow their regular hours Wednesday.
Today's warm temperatures helped melt the 6-plus inches of snow that fell over Burke County, and some government offices and facilities announced they will be back to normal schedules Tuesday.
BURKE COUNTY GOVERNMENT
As Burke moves into warmer temperatures over the next few days, officials are asking residents to remove snow and ice that blocks driveways, allowing faster response times for possible calls.
By Tuesday, Feb. 3, the JIC said Burke County government offices will be back open, although the Burke County Commissioners meeting scheduled for Monday, Feb. 2, will be postponed to Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 3 p.m.
FOR THE PAPER
The Burke County Landfill will reopen for business at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, but Burke County Convenience Sites will not open until 8 a.m.
The Burke County Courthouse will open at 9 a.m. District and Superior Courts will begin at 10 a.m.
MUNICIPALITIES
Morganton
Aside from the Mountain View indoor pool, which will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., City of Morganton offices and facilities will be back open on their regular 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule Tuesday.Â
Morganton garbage collection starts on Wednesday, and the city requests that residents take their garbage to the street. Routes will be offset by two days — Monday’s garbage will be picked up on Wednesday, Tuesday’s on Thursday, and Wednesday’s on Friday.
The Morganton City Council meeting that was planned for Feb. 2 has been postponed until Monday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers. This includes the public hearing for rezoning.
The City of Morganton also requested that residents report broken water mains to the Water Resources Department at 828-438-5276.
Valdese
Valdese offices will operate on a normal schedule Tuesday, with the exception of the Valdese Community Center, which will have a modified schedule, 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Valdese Town Council meeting scheduled for Monday, Feb. 2, has been rescheduled to Monday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m.
Drexel
Drexel Town Hall will have regular business hours Tuesday. Republic Services will pick up trash on Wednesday, Feb. 4. Have your carts out no later than 7 a.m. Wednesday. The Board of Aldermen meeting that had been scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 3, has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
Rutherford College
Rutherford College Town Hall will operate Tuesday, Feb. 3, on a two-hour delay (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Republic Services is on a one-day delay this week. When Simply Green will be able to pick up recyclables is still uncertain.
Glen Alpine has not made an announcement about Tuesday's schedule. The storm did not impact the regular Board of Aldermen meeting, which is Monday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m.
SCHOOLS
Burke County Public Schools (BCPS), New Dimensions Charter School, and Western Piedmont Community College will be operating on a remote day on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
BCPS will contact parents with instructions regarding attendance and assignments. Principals will contact staff to discuss plans for their days. YMCA programs are canceled for Tuesday. Â
EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Emergency responders took more than 620 calls from Saturday to Monday, spanning everything from multiple stranded motorists to one noise violation and one intoxication.
The Burke County Joint Information Center reported that icy conditions left 27 motorists stranded. The Morganton Department of Public Safety and several fire departments posted photos of wrecked and flipped cars on Facebook throughout the weekend, emphasizing requests for people stay home unless absolutely necessary to travel.
There were 45 calls due to falls, 12 search and rescue calls, 15 security checks, 16 structure fires, 14 police department calls for moving vehicle accidents, 19 medical transports, 18 domestic disturbances, and 11 welfare checks, among a variety of other calls.
Although the Burke County Sheriff’s Office reported a decrease in calls related to crime when Winter Storm Fern swept the county last weekend, this past snowy weekend still saw its share of five assault calls, eight disturbances, five larcenies or thefts, 11 trespasses, and even one burglary.
