FOR THE PAPER
Every month, the Individuals with Disabilities Adaptive Program (IDAP!) offers a free recreational event at either the Collett Street Recreation Center or Martha’s Park. Each event creates an experience where people can be themselves and enjoy recreational activities in their own way.
Assistant Director Andrew Tallent of Parks and Recreation oversees the program, which began in late 2023.
“Our very first event in July of 2023 had just one participant,” Tallent said. “Now, events range in participation from five to 30 attendees per activity. The program was grown through marketing efforts such as posting flyers and advertising on Facebook. We also completed public outreach and stakeholder interviews with organizations in the area that serve individuals with disabilities to get feedback on what may help increase attendance.”
Tallent said most participants live in Morganton or Burke County, but some attendees travel from neighboring areas like Marion.

ONE-DAY SUMMER CAMP
On July 8, the IDAP! offers a day full of fun camp activities and a place to make friends.
Wrapped into one day, activities include:
Arts and crafts
Science experiments
Visiting Martha’s Park
Hands-on activities like caring for plants and learning about exotic vegetables and fruits
Sports such as indoor kickball, basketball, and jumbo bowling
Games like Jumbo Jenga, Giant Connect Four, and a GaGa ball pit

IDAP! expanded its program to include the summer camp for the first time last year, Tallent said.
“We are hosting it again this July! We hope to continue offering free events each month and possibly more events during the summer months,” Tallent said.
The $10 early registration for the camp runs from Tuesday, April 1, to Sunday, June 1. After June 1, registration is $15 through Tuesday, July 1. The registration includes snacks, lunch, and crafting materials.
Guardians and support staff are welcome to stay for the camp. Lunch is also provided to campers.
SUPPORT
You can help IDAP! by either spreading the word about the program or volunteering for events.
Tallent said that a group of students from the Western Piedmont Community College Recreation Therapy program volunteers for some events.

“The community can support the IDAP! program by sharing the program with friends, family, and anyone who may benefit from or be interested in the program,” Tallent said.
