Downtown Morganton eased into the holiday season Saturday with a Winter Carnival that felt more like a sunny spring fling — only with more elves. Unseasonably warm weather and a broad sweep of blue sky set the tone as crowds drifted between the November Holiday Market and the Courthouse Square, turning the heart of the city into a celebration that didn’t need snow to feel festive.
The morning market buzzed with shoppers picking up local crafts, fresh produce, and last-chance fall plants. By mid-afternoon, the square had transformed into a cheerful maze of kids’ games, face painting, a whooshing ice slide, and a steady line of children clutching letters destined for Santa. Families piled into free carriage rides looping through downtown, while Frosty’s Diner and the Saint Charles Youth Group kept everyone fueled with treats and eggrolls. Food Lion’s “Holiday Front Porch” drew a curious crowd of its own, thanks to Leo the mascot and generous slices of pound cake.
As sculptor Aaron Costic coaxed a familiar green Grinch from a block of ice, the sun dipped just enough to signal the day’s finale. At 6 p.m., after a brief community reflection, downtown winked to life — thousands of lights washing the square in holiday glow.
