Reserved parking for veterans. Stepping pavers engraved with the names of veterans. Flags from every branch of the U.S. Military, including the latest addition — U.S. Space Force.
Those were a few of the suggestions to improve the town’s Veterans Memorial, posed by TJ Rose, an Air Force veteran who spoke before the Glen Alpine aldermen at their April meeting.
All the aldermen agreed the Veterans Memorial near the entrance to Glen Alpine’s downtown needs to be updated and refreshed. They also knew they couldn’t incorporate all of the ideas at once.
They decided to start with one particular addition: the Battlefield Cross. The cost: about $7,000.
Glen Alpine’s elected leaders voted unanimously to give $1,000, kickstarting a fundraising campaign that will be star of the show at the Glen Alpine in the Streets on Saturday, June 14. Fittingly, Saturday is Flag Day and the anniversary of the Continental Army, which later became the U.S. Army.
The Battlefield Cross is a monument featuring a rifle pointed downward with a helmet perched on the stock and a pair of soldier boots at the base. Interpretations vary regarding the meaning of the components, and how they are placed. The rifle facing downward means the soldier was killed in action; the placement of the boots signifies that the soldier has marched the final march to battle and will never be forgotten.
