May — the time of year when high school seniors prepare to end one chapter and begin the next. For 12 years they have worked for the right to cross that stage and be handed their high school diplomas.
This is the age when they have their entire lives in front of them and a plethora of options. Some will go to community college while others will attend a four-year university. Some will stay in Burke County and others will leave the comforts of home for another state. Military service will be the path some high school graduates will take, and others will go straight into the workforce.
Yet before any of that, there is one tradition in Burke County that enables seniors to return to where it all began — their elementary schools.
On Friday, May 16, seniors visited their former elementary schools. The visit was part sentimental and part inspirational. The young students they visited will one day be in their shoes, ready to take on the world.
